Who Are We
Hannastown Playground is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 charitable organization . The children of the community decided to take the bull by the horns to raise funds to remodel their own playground. They showed their creativity and initiative during this project.
The children sold lemonade, ice tea and cookies to raise their own personal funds of $1,800. The money was used to obtaining paint and play equipment that replaced augmented old swing sets and dilapidated basketball hoops.
On Friday, September 2, 2022 an article was published in The Tribune Review newspaper, Westmoreland County Edition in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. "The Hannastown Kids".

Hannastown Fireman's Club spent $1,200 to seal the basketball court. Comisak’s Line Painting made a $3,000 donation to paint the lines and colors on the court. There are only 3 basketball courts in the local area that kids can play outdoor basketball. Hannastown playground is 1 of the 3 and the oldest. Hannastown Playground has raised another $3,000 through donations through local businesses and individuals.
The Jamie Cordial Hall Foundation JCH, has agreed to provide a grant for the project. The playground has found grant providers offering up to 100% matching funds on playground systems once we raise $25,000. The playground is also reaching out to other grant programs available that will help develop the project.
What Makes Us Different
What Makes Hannastown Different From Others Parks And Playgrounds? Hannastown Playground is located in the present day “Village Of Hannastown.” The name Hannastown comes from an old community formed by Robert Hanna named Hanna's Town, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1773. It was a fort and was a safe place for travelers, settlers and those seeking justice and order in the environment of the Western Pennsylvania colonial frontier.
Hanna's Town served as a recruitment center for the county militia and Continental Army. Westmoreland County residents proclaimed their willingness to take up arms to defend their rights against Great Britain and supported the besieged residents of Boston. The Hanna's Town Resolves were one of the most direct challenges to British authority preceding the Declaration of Independence.
Hanna's Town was the county seat of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In one of the final conflicts of the Revolutionary War, Hanna's Town was attacked and burned on July 13, 1782, by a raiding party of Seneca and their British allies. The town never recovered and the county seat was moved to Greensburg in 1786. Hanna's Town flag, featuring a rattlesnake ready to strike the British Union Jack and the words "Don't Tread on Me," is now the official flag of Westmoreland County.
In 1969, Westmoreland County, collaborating with the Westmoreland Historical Society, purchased the 180-acre property for the purpose of creating a historic site that would preserve and share the story of Hanna’s Town. Since then, the Westmoreland Historical Society has initiated archaeological studies, rebuilt important structures such as Hanna's Tavern and the Fort, and developed educational programs to connect the public with an important piece of Westmoreland County history.
In 2019, the Westmoreland Historical Society moved its headquarters to Historic Hanna's Town and opening the Westmoreland History Education Center. With an exhibit gallery, classroom, museum shop, and library, the Education Center invites visitors, educators, and research to discover local history and its connections to broader historical narratives.
In 1899 the Jamison Coal & Coke Company opened a shaft-entry coal mine at Hannastown. The site was known as No. 2. Hannastown was originally called Jamison Coal Mine and Coke Company which later named the community Hannastown. Fort Hanna's Town is a ten minute walk from the playground.
Fort Hanna’s Town and Hempfield Township were both formed in 1773. Hempfield and Hannastown go a long way back. Hempfield Township holds the honor of being the oldest local municipality in Western Pennsylvania.
Today’s Hannastown is small community and still well-traveled. A bike and running course goes directly through it. It is highly known for its flea markets and fort. Currently, there is not a public park or playground within 4 miles of the neighborhood. The Hannastown Playground will help construct a local community space that will help children build relationships within the community and other children that come to visit.
